Kathleen Kennedy doesn’t think we’ll see an opening crawl in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

July 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last month Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy suggested that the upcoming Anthology movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may not feature the saga’s iconic opening crawl, and she’s reiterated that stance this weekend during an interview with ET at Star Wars Celebration Europe.

“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl,” said Kennedy with regards to Rogue One and future Anthology movies such as the Han Solo film. “I think that’s what we kind of telegraphed at the beginning of the event today.”

Director Gareth Edwards was less committal, replying that: “I think basically there’s a lot of things that I probably can’t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that. The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films…the whole crawl of it all — it’s funny people are fascinated on that. This film is born out of a crawl. The thing that inspired this movie was a crawl and what was written in that. There’s this feeling that if we did a crawl, then it’ll create another movie. And so the honest answer is you’ll have to wait and see.

Do you want to see an opening crawl in Rogue One and the subsequent Anthology films? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and be sure to check out our round-up of all the news from Star Wars Celebration Europe in this week’s edition of The Week in Star Wars.

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, is the first film in the new standalone movies from Lucasfilm. It tells the story of how a group of unlikely heroes unite to undertake a daring and seemingly impossible mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.
