2018’s Tomb Raider movie to begin shooting next month

December 22, 2016 by Justin Cook

While many video game and movie fans have their attention focused on the release of this week’s Assassin’s Creed, an outlet has just revealed some exciting news about a future video game movie. According to My Entertainment World (via ScreenRant), the Roar Uthaug-directed Tomb Raider reboot will begin filming in January 2017. Known shooting locations for the film include the UK and South Africa.

The fact that production is just around the corner makes a whole lot of sense, considering how the film is expected to make its theatrical debut on March 16th, 2018. Starting next month should give everyone involved plenty of time to get the film in a good condition before its release.

The film will be based on the much-loved 2013 Tomb Raider video game about Lara Croft’s origins and first archaeological expedition to an island on which a crazed cult resides. At least some of the film will revolve around Lara as she seeks answers about what happened to her father and discovers whether or not he is alive.

Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) will play Croft and Justified actor Walton Goggins will play the main antagonist opposite her. As of now, the two remain the only cast members publicly attached to the project, but expect a number of announcements in the near future.
