Steven Spielberg’s The BFG gets a release date

June 16, 2014 by admin

We’ve not heard from Steven Spielberg since 2012’s Lincoln and his adaptation of Robopocalypse has been put on indefinite hold, but we now know the release dates of his next two movies, including his live-action adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book The BFG.

First up is Spielberg teaming up with Tom Hanks (Captain Philips) in an untitled Cold War thriller based on the real-life story of James Donovan, who was sent on a next-to-impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot by the CIA. It may not have a title, but it will hit cinemas on October 16th 2015.

After that, Spielberg will be helming the live-action version of The BFG, which is set for release on July 1st 2016, tells the fantastical story of a Big Friendly Giant who befriends a young orphan girl. Dreamworks acquired the rights to the book in 2011 with Kathleen Kenedy and Frank Marshall set to produce. With the pair now busy with everything Star Wars, the movie will be overseen by Michael Siegel and John Madden (who was lined to direct the movie at one point).

The book, originally released in 1982 with artwork by Quentin Blake, was first brought to the big screen in the 1989 animated classic The BFG which featured David Jason voicing the titular giant.
