Last month it was revealed that the long-gestating big screen adaptation of Robotech had secured a screenwriter in Michael Gordon (300, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), and now comes word that Sony has picked up the rights to the project and is looking to launch a potential franchise.
Variety is reporting that the studio is looking to fast track the live-action feature and views the property as having the necessary appeal to launch a blockbuster series with an “Independence Day meets Star Wars vibe”.
“Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” said Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael De Luca. “That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”
Robotech launched in 1985 courtesy of Harmony Gold USA, who edited together content from three popular Japanese anime series in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA. The live-action movie has been in development for several years, with Warner Bros. previously holding the rights.
