The Week in Star Wars – New footage from The Force Awakens, new character posters, no more Slave Leia merchandise and more

November 8, 2015 by Luke Owen

In this edition of The Week in Star Wars, we have new character posters, comments from Daisy Ridley and John Boyega about The Force Awakens and a rumour about Disney’s plans for the future of Slave Leia…

J.J. Abrams previously said that there won’t be anymore trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but a new Japanese trailer for the movie has revealed a whole host of unseen footage. So was Abrams lying to us, or is this the beginning of a new set of tricks up the director’s sleeves?..

…Flickering Myth TV producer and all round nice bloke Oli Davis breaks down the new trailer shot for shot here…

…Following the new International trailer, Disney also dropped a new banner for The Force Awakens featuring Finn as well as a new poster which places Kylo Ren front and centre…

…Not only that, but Disney and Lucasfilm dropped five new character posters this week featuring newcomers Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) along with the returning Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia (Carrie Fisher)…

…Speaking of newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, the pair of them were interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter about their characters, which you can read here…

…On a slightly darker note, a terminally ill cancer patient by the name of Daniel Fleetwood won over the hearts of millions of Star Wars fans this week as he pleaded with J.J. Abrams, Disney and Lucasfilm to see an early cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens before he passes away. While a very sad story, we did get word that Disney responded and have allowed Daniel to see the movie in the comfort of his own home. Good work Disney…

…Let’s lighten the movie shall we? The chaps over at Screen Junkies usually wait until a film has come out before spoofing it for their Honest Trailer series, but they’ve jumped on Star Wars: The Force Awakens early which you can watch here. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a Prequel Trilogy cut of the last Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, which you can watch here…

…No need for the Duracell bunny in your batteries this Christmas, as all of the world’s toys will be powered by The Force thanks to a new TV advert for Star Wars: The Force Awakens…

…After teasing us that it was on its way, Hot Toys unveiled their 1/6th scale collectible of Captain Phasma from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, who joins Kylo Ren, Stormtrooper, Gunner Stormtrooper, Stormtrooper Squad Leader, Snowtrooper, Snowtrooper Officer, Flametrooper and TIE Pilot…

…According to the last trailer for The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren has said that he wants to finish what Vader started. Well, our own Anghus Houvouras thinks that’s a bit stupid…

…Moving away from The Force Awakens now and following the controversy a couple of months ago over the Black Series Princess Leia figure in her Return of the Jedi costume, a new rumour has come out that Disney are officially retiring Slave Leia from all future merchandise. “Disney is well on its way to wiping out the “slave” outfit from any future products period,” claimed Marvel comics artist J Scott Campbell on his Facebook page. “You will NOT see and future merchandising featuring the slave outfit ever again. Trust me. I’ve heard it from two sources. We can’t even draw Leia in a sexy pose at Marvel, let alone in that outfit! We also had a 3-D SL [Slave Leia] statue killed at a major manufacturer because there will no longer be any SL merchandise…”

…Electronic Arts have released a new teaser trailer for Star Wars Battlefront which explores the Battle of Jakku, which takes place 29 years prior to the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and results in the crashed Star Destroyer glimpsed in the trailers for December’s blockbuster…

…Not only that, but they also released a new teaser that explores the other planets featured in the game…

…Moving over to Star Wars Rebels and the latest Rebels Recon featurette arrived online, taking us inside the latest episode, exploring the return of pirate Hondo Ohnaka from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and looking ahead to next week’s ‘Wings of the Master’. Meanwhile, you can also check out a clip and selection of images from ‘Wings of the Master’ here…

…Speaking of which, you can read Chris Cooper’s review of the latest episode of Star Wars Rebels here…

…In anticipation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Marvel will be giving fans a free taster of their line-up of Star Wars comics with the release of Star Wars Sampler #1, a 56 page comic featuring previews of Star Wars #1, Darth Vader #1, Princess Leia #1, Lando #1, Vader Down #1 and Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire #1…

…And before we dive into our comic book preview for the week, we got a look at Clay Mann’s connecting variant covers for Marvel’s upcoming Star Wars: Vader Down, which takes in all three issues of the event: Star Wars: Vader Down #1, Star Wars: Darth Vader #13 and Star Wars #13…

…And lastly, here’s you comic book previews for the week, kicking off with Star Wars: Darth Vader #12, which will hit shelves on November 11th: Vader’s machinations have him painted into a corner…but no one puts Vader in a corner. The hit series’ second arc concludes here! And here’s the preview for Star Wars Chewbacca #2, which is also out on November 11th: RRRRrrrRAAAAHHHGHGGGG! Errf errrf errff AAAAANNNNG! GGGGGNNNNNaAaAaAaAaA!

That’s all for this week – may The Force be with you…
