Deadpool enjoys biggest ever February debut at the UK box office

February 15, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It shattered records across the Pond with a $135 million three-day opening, and 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool has also claimed the biggest ever February opening here in the UK with £13.7 million. That’s also bigger than every previous instalment in the X-Men franchise, and the second highest opening weekend ever for 20th Century Fox.

“We are thrilled with Deadpool’s opening weekend success. The response to our anti-hero has been staggering, especially in such a big year for superhero movies,” states Cameron Saunders, Twentieth Century Fox’s UK managing director. “This fantastic result demonstrates the great appetite for Deadpool’s existing and newfound fans to see him on the big screen.”

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is set for release on February 10th in the UK and February 12th in the States and sees Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of the Merc with a Mouth alongside T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Weasel, Morena Baccarin (Gotham) as Copycat, Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) as Angel Dust, Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) as Ajax, Stefan Kapicic (24) as Colossus, Leslie Uggams (Roots) as Blind Al and newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
