Legendary sets Justin Lin to direct Hot Wheels movie

September 29, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It seems like forever since we last heard about the planned big screen adaptation of Hot Wheels, but now it looks like Legendary Pictures is revving up its engines on the Mattel toy adaptation with Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond) signing on to produce and direct the film.

Lin – who may also co-finance the movie through his Perfect Storm Entertainment production banner – certainly seems like a good fit for the project, having helmed four instalments of the Fast & Furious franchise from 2006’s Tokyo Drift through to 2013’s Fast & Furious 6. He is also attached to direct Space Jam 2, and his been linked to the live-action Akira adaptation, but Hot Wheels is said to be next on his slate.

The Hot Wheels movie has been in development since 2003, with McG (Charlie’s Angels) originally attached to direct when the project was set up at Columbia. It then moved on to Warner Bros. and Legendary before celebrated stunt man Simon Crane signed on to direct in 2013, at which point it stalled and found itself stuck in development hell.
