The Mortal Kombat movie reboot finds a director

November 19, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It looks like the long-gestating movie reboot of the hit video game series Mortal Kombat could finally be moving forward, with Variety reporting that commercials director Simon McQuoid is in talks with New Line Cinema to helm the film.

Mortal Kombat is being produced by James Wan (The Conjuring), who took over the project following the departure of director Kevin Tancharoen, the filmmaker behind the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short and Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series.

The beat-em-up series first graced the big screen in 1995, with Paul W.S. Anderson directing. The movie was followed by the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, as well as the 1998 live-action TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest.
