La La Land producer enlists Viola Davis and Julia Roberts for Small Great Things

February 3, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that La La Land producer Marc Platt has lined up Viola Davis (Fences) and Julia Roberts (Mother’s Day) for his next project, an adaptation of Jodi Picoult’s novel Small Great Things. As yet, there’s no word on a writer or director.

Small Great Things “follows Ruth, a labor/delivery nurse who takes care of newborns at a Connecticut hospital but is told not to touch the baby of a couple who are white supremacists. Ruth, who has 20 years experience with newborns, is a widow whose husband was killed in Afghanistan and whose son is an honor student. When the couple’s baby dies and Ruth is the only one present, she is taken to court by the couple.”

La La Land is up for a record-tying 14 nominations at this month’s Academy Awards, while Viola Davis is also in contention for the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Fences.
