Amazon to develop Cleopatra series from Black Sails trio

May 26, 2017 by Ricky Church

A few days ago Amazon acquired a TV series based on 2011’s film Hanna and now the streaming service has gained yet another show, Cleopatra.

Based on the Egyptian queen who ruled Egypt and became the last active Pharaoh of the country before Rome’s rule, the series will come from the Black Sails team of Jonathan E. Steinberg, Robert Levine and Dan Sholtz.

Cleopatra is described as a “revisionist take on one of history’s most misunderstood women, The Godfather in Ancient Egypt. After nearly losing her life in a bloody coup, Cleopatra must use her natural wit and political genius to take back her throne and restore honor to her family and kingdom.” Throughout her reign, she survived a coup, allied herself with Julius Caesar and married Marc Antony.

Levine will write the series and act as a producer with Steinberg and Sholtz. The three of them are just coming off the final season of Black Sails at Starz.
