Lucasfilm had no firm story plans for Episodes VIII and IX following Star Wars: The Force Awakens

May 30, 2017 by Samuel Brace

It has been revealed that Lucasfilm didn’t have concrete plans for Star Wars: Episode VIII and Episode IX after The Force Awakens.

There is of course huge anticipation for the next movie in the franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and the director of that film, Rian Johnson, has commented that Lucasfilm didn’t have his movie and the subsequent episode mapped out when he came on board. Responding to a poster on Twitter, Johnson said the following:

https://twitter.com/rianjohnson/status/869011501889200128?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fcomicbook.com%2Fstarwars%2F2017%2F05%2F29%2Flucasfilm-no-plans-for-episodes-viii-ix-after-the-force-awakens%2F

One would have thought Lucasfilm and the Story Group would have had some detailed, elaborate plan for where the saga was heading post The Force Awakens but it seems like this wasn’t the case at all.

Therefore, Rian Johnson supposedly had the freedom to create the movie he wanted without being burdened by future plans for the franchise.

Following this logic, one can assume that Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow will have similar freedom to craft the final film in the trilogy.
