Takashi Miike’s 100th film Blade of the Immortal secures U.S. distribution

May 14, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike is set to unleash his 100th film, Blade of the Immortal, upon Cannes this coming week, and Magnet Releasing has announced that it has acquired the rights to the project for release in the United States.

Based on Hiroaki Samura’s manga series, Blade of the Immortal takes place in Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate period and follows a cursed samurai called Manji, who has to kill 1000 evil men in order to regain his mortality. Crossing paths with a young girl, the samurai vows to help her avenge the murder of her parents.

“We’ve been huge fans of Miike for a long time and couldn’t be more excited to work with him again on Blade of the Immortal,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “The action and fight choreography in this film are both visceral and balletic. They’re on another level.”

“I’m pleased to present my latest film,” added Miike. “It is a Samurai Action about an immortal warrior. Love and tears splatter with arms, legs and heads that are chopped and splattered. I hope the audience will be prepared for this and enjoy the film.”
