Spider-Man: Homecoming could gross over $200 million in its opening weekend

July 6, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Spider-Man: Homecoming is being lined up to score $100 million plus at the US box office for its opening weekend.

One of the most anticipated films of the summer is about to sling into cinemas and industry tracking is projecting an impressive opening bow for the picture.

The film’s studio is expressing a modest expectation of $80 million but the reality could be far sweeter for Sony with the movie likely to gross anywhere between $85 million – $110 million.

The high end of these predictions would see the film besting both Amazing Spider-Man films which brought in $62 million and $91 million, respectively. However it is likely to fall far short of Spider-Man 3 which nabbed a whopping $151 million for its opening bow.

Homecoming is being received positively by most critics with the film holding a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 73 on metacritic. Both of which bode well for the film’s financial success.

UPDATE: Globally, Homecoming is said to be tracking between $190 and $210 million from its opening weekend.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
