The Punisher aiming for different approach to other Marvel TV shows

July 10, 2017 by Jordan Jones

The television side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going strong for a few years now, and has generally been well-received. Better yet: the shows are all drastically different from one another in content, and tone. Daredevil and Iron First have been full of action, while Jessica Jones focused more on character, and mature themes. Luke Cage had the most distinct tone so far, with its awesome ’70s blaxploitation feel.

Up next on the roster is Marvel’s The Punisher starring Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) as Frank Castle. So, with the varied tones of each show, what will Frank Castle’s first solo-outing be like? One of The Punisher season one directors Stephen Surjik recently talked to Combat Radio about the different approach that is being taken with the upcoming series…

“It is different than the other Marvel shows as far as it is an adult drama. There are no superpowers. You know the Punisher is a character who is based on vengeance, fundamentally. His family is a victim of some horrific thing, but the character himself is well-known and the way that they approach it is very different from the other shows.”

Strangely, it sounds like The Punisher season one might be the closest thing fans get to a proper Batman series for some time (with plenty of guns, of course).

The Punisher is slated to hit Netflix later this year, and features a cast that includes Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Ben Barnes (Billy Russo), Jason R Moore (Curtis Hoyle), Michael Nathanson (Sam Stein), Daniel Webber (Lewis Walcott), Amber Rose Revah (Dinah Madani), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Micro), Jaime Ray Newman (Sarah Lieberman), Paul Schulze (Bill Rawlins) and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
