Maleficent 2 is seemingly back on track as the screenwriter of Spectre has joined proceedings.
The sequel to the Angelina Jolie, Sleeping Beauty-related Maleficent was thought to have disappeared off Disney’s radar given the lack of news on the project. But word that Jez Butterworth, co-writer of Spectre, has been brought on board, shows that there is life yet. Butterworth is set to re-write Linda Woolverton’s original draft of the Maelficent 2 script.
Angelina Jolie hasn’t officially yet committed to the film herself, which sounds like a worry as her always busy schedule might be the deciding factor if and not when the project makes its way to screens.
The first Maleficent movie was a big success for Disney, bringing a sizeable $758 million at the international box office from a fairly hefty $180 million production budget.
How quickly we hear more news regarding Maleficent 2 will likely depend on how well Butterworth’s draft is received. And for that we can only wait and see.
