Red Sonja reboot moving forward in the wake of Wonder Woman success

November 4, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Having been stuck in development hell for the best part of a decade, it looks like the Red Sonja reboot may finally be moving forward thanks to the box office success of Warner Bros.’ female-led DC blockbuster Wonder Woman.

According to Deadline, Millennium Media is moving forward with a new movie, which is being produced by Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta alongside of Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of Cinelou. The idea is to fast track the project, and the search is now underway for a writer.

“We have been waiting for the right time for this remake,” said Lerner. “With the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken. They want female heroes.”

Loosely based on Conan creator Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogantino, Red Sonja debuted in the Marvel Comics series Conan the Barbarian #23 in 1973, and was portrayed by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 feature film.

Robert Rodriguez originally intended on bringing Red Sonja back to the big screen back in 2008, with Rose McGowan attached to play the title character. Since then the project has passed through the hands of numerous writers and directors, while rumours in 2016 suggested that Bryan Singer was looking to develop an R-rated TV series. An animated film Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues was also released in 2016.
