Atari announces pre-order date for the Ataribox

December 11, 2017 by Andrew Newton

Atari have announced that their return to the hardware market, the Ataribox, will be available to pre-order on the 14th December.  This is great news for the many Atari fans who want to get hold of this new wood veneered machine although you will need to be ready on the day as the pre-order deals will be extremely limited.

Heavily influenced by the classic Atari 2600, the Ataribox features a black plastic and wood veneer finish that will whisk players back to those wonderful days of childhood gaming but will possess a sleek design that suits contemporary consoles.

The Ataribox will run a Linux OS powered by an AMD processor with Radeon Graphics technology and will provide gamers with a user interface that is customised for the TV and allows streaming, applications, social media, browsing, music as well as gaming.

On the gaming side of things, the Ataribox will bring a variety of new games from a range of developers  as well as a large back catalogue of classic games although let’s hope that doesn’t include E.T..

Ataribox will initially be available via the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform with a full release in spring 2018 with an expected price range of $249-$299.
