Phoebe Waller-Bridge talks Solo: A Star Wars Story director switch-up

January 16, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As we patiently await the first trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge has become the latest cast member to weigh in with her thoughts on the big director switch-up, which saw Ron Howard coming in to complete the movie after Lucasfilm fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller due to creative differences.

Speaking to IGN, the Fleabag star – who is set to portray the droid character DD-BD – shared her excitement over getting to work with Howard, as well as claiming that Lord and Miller’s influence will still be felt in the final film.

“The handover there was done with such warmth and generosity from everybody, and Ron’s just a master at his craft; he’s going to make a beautiful film out of it. You just really trust him and it was just really exciting to work with him. I mean, it would’ve been exciting to just pass him in a corridor, let alone for him to be parachuted in to the film you’re working on. We’d done some really, really great stuff with Chris and Phil that everyone was really thrilled with, and I think a lot of that will still be in it.”

Howard is rumoured to have reshot much of the film – with some reports claiming as much as 80% – although this seems to have been downplayed by much of the cast, including Donald Glover. Nevertheless, it’s also been reported that more reshoots are expected, although these are likely to be simple pick-ups rather than anything major.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as DD-BD, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Quay Tolsite, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Tien Hoang (Now You See Me 2) as Moloch’s henchman and Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on May 25th 2018.
