Todd McFarlane says Spawn won’t talk in the reboot, but he will have a voice

January 19, 2018 by Jordan Jones

We’ve gotten some interesting details lately surrounding the upcoming reboot of ’90s anti-hero Spawn. Creator and director Todd McFarlane has gone on record stating that the film will fully utilize its R-Rating, and that it will be more adult-oriented than Deadpool. We also know that Spawn will have a heavy horror vibe, which is fitting for the character. And now we have some information on how Spawn will communicate in the upcoming film.

In a conversation with Comicbook.com, McFarlane describes the way he will give Spawn a voice:

“So, there’s a nuance here right? So Spawn, the being of Spawn, the sentinel being of Spawn doesn’t speak, but I’ve created another way to be able to give him a voice. But what won’t happen is that you won’t see Spawn in his big costume and cape go ‘hello everybody. I’m here to save the day’. None of that.”

Spawn is obviously going to be very different from other comic book films. With the Hellboy reboot going for a scarier vibe, as well as The New Mutants basically being a horror film, perhaps we are about to enter the era of legitimately scary comic book movies?

There is no release date at this time, but we do know that Todd McFarlane will direct Spawn, and that the film has found a fitting home over at Blumhouse Productions.
