Lobo screenwriter discusses his comic book inspirations for the DC movie

February 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last week it was announced that Warner Bros. is courting Transformers director Michael Bay to take the reins on the studio’s long-gestating DC adaptation Lobo movie, and now we have some comments from screenwriter Justin Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who has discussed his comic book inspirations for the project.

“I think when you’re working on comic book characters, especially ones that are near and dear to my heart, like Wonder Woman and Lobo are, you want to create something that’s true to what the original text is,” Fuchs told LRM. “I think Wonder Woman really captures the feeling of — not only the original Moulton Marston comics, but the George Perez run in the late-80s. It feels like reading those comics up on the big screen. So for something like Lobo, without saying too much about it, it’ll feel, I imagine, quite different because the Lobo comic itself is quite different. What Keith Giffen and Alan Grant put together was something really unique, and hopefully, we’ll capture some of that same spirit when we make the movie.”

Warner Bros. has been developing a Lobo movie for a decade, with both Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton attached to direct at various points, and Dwayne Johnson in talks to star before he shifted his focus to another DC character, Black Adam.

If recent reports are to be believed, Bay is considering taking on directing duties on the movie, but is waiting on the latest draft of the script from Fuchs, with both the filmmaker and Warner Bros. hoping the rewrite can bring down a potential budget north of $200 million.
