Avengers: Infinity War director says “there is nobody” who can take over from Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man

April 20, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As we fast approach the end of the first chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Infinity War and next year’s Avengers 4, it is expected that we’ll be bidding farewell to some of our favourite heroes as contracts expire, actors move on, and the landscape of the MCU shifts towards some newer faces.

One of the actors who many expect to make way over the next two Avengers movies is Robert Downey Jr., who of course kickstarted the entire MCU when he took on the role of Tony Stark back in 2008’s Iron Man. However, Marvel will be wasting its time trying to find a successor, at least according to Infinity War co-director Joe Russo, who believes Downey is irreplaceable.

“There is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert,” said Russo, who also directed the actor in Captain America: Civil War. “He can’t play the character forever. I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here.”

Of course, it’s possible that the need to recast Tony Stark/Iron Man is a moot point, should the character fail to make it out of Phase Three alive. Time will tell.

An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.
