A Star Wars veteran cameos as a Wookiee in Solo: A Star Wars Story

May 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Warning. Minor spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story follow…

In an effort to stand out from the main saga, Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars Anthology movies have already broke with tradition, dropping the likes of the opening crawl and the John Williams score in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it seems that next week’s Solo: A Star Wars Story is set to bring the curtain down on another.

Last week, Mark Hamill seemingly let slip a spoiler when he revealed that Anthony Daniels appears in Solo, the assumption being that C-3PO and R2-D2 would continue their streak of appearing in every Star Wars movie. However, co-writer Jonathan Kasdan has revealed that isn’t quite the case after all.

“No, but Anthony Daniels is in the movie as a different character,” Kasdan told Uproxxx when asked if we can expect to see Threepio  popping up in Solo. “In the Papillon type offshoot story, the Wookiee that helps them escape, Chewbacca’s best friend, is played by Anthony Daniels – and beckons him to join them as they escape on a different ship.”

It was of course inevitable that one day we’d see a Star Wars movie without the two iconic droids, but surely it makes more sense to leave them out rather than trying to shoehorn them into the story unnecessarily just to tick a box.

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Jon Favreau (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Rio Durant, Tien Hoang (Now You See Me 2) as Moloch’s henchman, Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) as Dryden Vos and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
