Logan’s James Mangold to write and direct a Boba Fett Star Wars movie

May 24, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Coinciding with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm has finally confirmed the long-rumoured Boba Fett Anthology movie is happening, with Logan helmer James Mangold set to write and direct.

A Boba Fett movie is thought to have been in the works at Lucasfilm for several years now, with Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) attached to direct at one point before being fired from the project. X-Men and Star Wars Rebels writer and producer Simon Kinberg was also rumoured to have written a script for a Fett solo film, and it’s unclear at this point whether Mangold is reworking that screenplay, or starting from scratch.

The bounty hunter made his debut in the galaxy far, far away in an animated segment of 1978’s The Star Wars Holiday Special, before solidifying his place as a fan favourite character with his appearances in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

In addition to the Boba Fett movie, Lucasfilm is also working on several other spinoffs, including an Obi-Wan Kenobi film (which has been rumoured to shoot next year), along with a trilogy of films from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, and another movie series from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Meanwhile, Jon Favreau is working on a live-action TV series set seven years after Return of the Jedi, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni has a new animated series entitled Star Wars Resistance incoming.
