Solo: A Star Wars Story pre-sales double Marvel’s Black Panther in first 24 hours, new TV spot released

May 5, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

While Marvel is currently tearing up the box office with Avengers: Infinity War, it looks like fellow Disney release Solo: A Star Wars Story is gearing up to do the same at the end of the month.

Tickets for the Ron Howard-directed Anthology movie went on sale on Thursday night, and Fandango is reporting that pre-sales in the first 24 hours were twice that of Marvel’s superhero blockbuster Black Panther.

Given that Black Panther opened to a whopping $242.2 million four-day domestic opening weekend back in February, Disney and Lucasfilm will surely be encouraged by the pre-sale numbers for Solo, particularly as it has been deemed a “troubled” production.

Tracking for Solo has the movie at a $170 million four-day domestic debut, which would surely be considered a win by Lucasfilm. However, as we’ve seen time and time again, these figures are often wide of the mark, and if Solo delivers strong reviews and word of mouth, it’s not inconceivable that it could potentially go higher than that.

Let us know your predictions for Solo’s opening weekend in the comments below, and while you’re here, be sure to check out the latest TV spot…

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Jon Favreau (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Rio Durant, Tien Hoang (Now You See Me 2) as Moloch’s henchman, Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) as Dryden Vos and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
