Robert Englund explains how he’d reboot A Nightmare on Elm Street

August 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Following 2010’s disappointing reboot starring Jackie Earle Haley, it was reported a few years back that New Line Cinema would be taking a second stab at relaunching the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise with another remake, although as yet the project has failed to materialise.

For many fans, the key ingredient to the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise – and an irreplaceable one at that – is Robert Englund, who portrayed the child killer Freddy Krueger throughout all of the original films.

Englund himself has said on several occasions that he feels he’s now too old to portray Freddy, but speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour this week (via Dark Horizons), the actor has revealed one suggestion as to how he thinks a new Nightmare could work:

“If I had an Eli Roth budget I would have cast different actors to play Freddy for every potential victim, because Freddy is only alive in the imagination of his future victim,” said Englund. “They would talk about it at a slumber party or in a locker room at school, or on the bus going home. All we know about this Fred Krueger is he wears a hat, wears a red and green striped sweater and has a clawed hand. That’s the specifics. At the end, it would be the ultimate victim and we see Freddy peel [his face] open and maybe it’s yours truly revealed. And it’s the essence of Freddy.”

What do you make of Englund’s idea for a Nightmare on Elm Street reboot? Is it something you’d like to see, or do you think the franchise should be left to rest in peace? Let us know in the comments below…
