Rumour: Tom Cruise and Mark Wahlberg were wanted for Hal Jordan role in Green Lantern Corps

August 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

DC Films’ planned superhero space epic Green Lantern Corps took a step forward back in June when it was announced that former DC CCO Geoff Johns had signed on to serve as writer and producer on the project, replacing The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer.

Whether or not Johns’ involvement will prove to be the key to getting Green Lantern Corps moving ahead of a planned 2020 release date remains to be seen, but while we wait we do have some rumours about who Warner Bros. may have previously approached to take on the role of Hal Jordan.

Now, given the sources involved, these claims should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, but according to Revenge of the Fans, former producer Charles Roven was pushing for Mark Wahlberg (Mile 22) to take Lantern Oath, while celebrity gossip site Crazy Days and Nights claim that Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) was actually offered the role of Hal Jordan but decided to pass.

Why, you ask? Well, the reason may include spoilers, so skip the next paragraph if you don’t want to know…

Well, according to the site, the script – or the version back in March, at least – sees Hal Jordan killed, and Cruise “wanted no part of that.”

Whether this current report is accurate or not, Cruise had been rumoured for a role in Green Lantern Corps on numerousoccasions, so it’s certainly possible that he was in the running to play Hal Jordan – and may well still be on DC’s radar, if Johns has different ideas for the character in his version of the script.

Although we know very little about DC’s Green Lantern Corps plans, it has been confirmed that the film will feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, with the former expected to take on a mentor role to the newly-recruited Stewart.

What are your thoughts on either Mark Wahlberg or Tom Cruise has Hal Jordan? Let us know in the comments below…
