Star Wars Resistance Season 1 Episode 7 Review – ‘Signal from Sector Six’

November 15, 2018 by Ricky Church

Ricky Church reviews the seventh episode of Star Wars Resistance, ‘Signal from Sector Six’…

After the last couple of episodes taking more of a serious route and delving into the main plot of the series, Star Wars Resistance‘s ‘Signal from Sector Six’ offered more of a fun detour for Kaz and a returning Poe Dameron after they investigated a mysterious distress call. The story was light as they got caught up in some hi-jinks aboard the ship and it was nice to see Poe again, but were it not for the introduction of a new character and the episode’s final moments, it wouldn’t feel entirely necessary.

The best thing about ‘Sector Six’ was Poe’s return to gain updates from Kaz and train him a little more in the art of X-Wing piloting. Oscar Isaac gave a good performance as Poe, again mixing Poe’s lightheartedness and seriousness rather well. It was amusing to see him get increasingly annoyed with the Kowakian monkey-lizards (the small creature seen with Jabba the Hutt) as they kept pestering him and Kaz. Their antics were mostly for comedic effect and were reminiscent of gremlins as they tricked and bit the pair or stole their equipment. Things took a bit more of a serious turn when pirates returned to the ship and a Kowakian ape-lizard, a much larger and dangerous version of the monkey-lizard, was let loose and attacked everyone.

Because of the light story, there wasn’t much character development at all. Kaz learnt a few tips to become a better pilot and trust his instinct more, at least when in the pilot’s chair, but that was about it. He makes the right choice in saving Synara, a person trapped on the attacked ship, but doesn’t necessarily make a smart decision afterwards. The final reveal that Synara is a pirate and not one a member of the freighter’s crew was a surprise and it was nice that it added to the overall plot of the series as the pirates have plans for the Colossus. Synara seems to be an interesting character and it’ll be neat to have an added wrench into Kaz’s life and mission. The reveal, though, didn’t quite make up for how separate the rest of the episode was from the main plot, but it is at least a welcome wrinkle to our heroes.

‘Signal from Sector Six’ was rather entertaining with its antics on board the ship and some more X-Wing dog fighting, but it doesn’t feel like a necessary addition to the series. The reveal comes a bit too late into the story to make a real dent, but Synara seems like an interesting enough character. Hopefully we’ll learn more about her and see a bounce back to the quality of the previous couple episodes in the next episode.

Rating: 7/10
