Doctor Strange featured in the first draft of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

December 12, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having teamed up in this year’s Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange could have found themselves sharing the screen for a second time this month, with producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealing that the first draft of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse featured a cameo from the Sorcerer Supreme.

“The first draft ended with [Strange],” Lord tells Den of Geek. “It ended with him saying, ‘Okay, I have some things to tell you.’ It was the first draft, like three years ago. It ended with Doctor Strange. Literally, the last frame was Doctor Strange, going, ‘Hello.'”

The rights to Doctor Strange belong to Marvel, so Sony would have needed to seek permission for any appearance by the dimension-hopping Master of the Mystic Arts, but whether or not the idea progressed that far is unclear.

As an aside, this wouldn’t have been the first Doctor Strange link with the Spider-Man movie franchise, given that the character was namedropped in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 back in 2004:

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, the screenplay is by Phil Lord. The film is produced, in association with Marvel, by Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse features a voice cast that includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, Kimiko Glenn, John Mulaney, Jorma Taccone, Lake Bell, Oscar Isaac, Kathryn Hahn, Zoe Kravitz and Chris Pine.
