Game of Thrones and HBO break records with 2019 Emmy Award nominations

It’s final season may have left much of the fanbase feeling cold, but the conclusion to HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones seemed to go down a treat with Emmy voters as the show has earned an unprecedented 32 nominations at this year’s Emmy Awards, shattering the 25-year record set by NYPD Blue for the most nominations for a series in a single season.

HBO also scored a new record with a total of 137 nominations across all categories, including Chernobyl (19), Barry (17), True Detective (9), Veep (9), Deadwood (8), Sharp Objects (8) and Succession (5). Netflix followed in second with 117 nominations including When They See Us (16), Russian Doll (13), Ozark (9) and GLOW (5).
