André Øvredal to direct Dracula-inspired The Last Voyage of the Demeter

October 2, 2019 by Ricky Church

André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) is set for his next horror film, this time revolving around the infamous vampire Dracula. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Øvredal will direct The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a seafaring horror that has been in development hell for nearly two decades, as it finds its new home at Amblin Partners.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows a chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel Dracula. It takes place during Dracula’s journey from Transylvania to London, in which his coffin is loaded onto the ship Demeter only for it to wash ashore with no survivors after a mysterious passenger slaughters the entire crew over the length of the trip.

The script was originally written in 2002 by screenwriter Bragi Schut (Season of the Witch) and has had several homes and attached directors over the years. The closest it came to production was in 2012 with director David Slade (30 Days of Night) attached and Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace set to star, though it ultimately never came to fruition.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter will be produced by Bradley Fischer, Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer for Amblin. Øvredal is also attached to adapt Stephen King’s novel The Long Walk for New Line.
