Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall agrees that the final season felt “really rushed”

October 15, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Former Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall has agreed with the fan backlash that the final season felt “really rushed” and explained how he would have taken a different approach to directing the battle scenes.

“It’s very difficult to second guess those guys because they are geniuses and they have done such an amazing job,” Marshall shared with Metro. “Inevitably, I would’ve taken a different approach to directing. One of the greatest experiences I had with working on both those episodes was that they were so open to bringing my ideas, particularly about battle scenes and how battles worked. I would’ve definitely added my strategy and knowledge to that.”

During his time on Game of Thrones, Marshall directed ‘Blackwater’ from Season 2 and ‘The Watchers on the Wall’ from Season 4, two episodes remembered for their huge action set-pieces. However, Marshall took issue with how the final pieces of the puzzle fitted together in the end.

“I kind of agree with a lot of the criticism that it was really rushed,” Marshall said. “Everyone ended up where they were meant to end up but they got there in a little bit of a rush in the end.”
