Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg returning to World War II for new miniseries Masters of the Air

October 13, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Steven Spielberg’s Amblin and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’ Playtone have signed a deal with Apple TV+ for Masters of the Air, a World War II event miniseries which will serve as a follow up to their acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

The project, which was originally in development for HBO, is based upon Donald L. Miller’s book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany. Band of Brothers veteran John Orloff is writing the script, while Spielberg, Hanks and Goetzman will service as executive producers.

Band of Brothers and The Pacific racked up an impressive 14 Emmy wins between them, with both shows winning the Outstanding Limited Series category. Both audiences and Apply will surely then have high expectations for Masters of the Air, which will run for over eight hours at a cost in excess of $200 million.

Masters of the Air becomes the second Steven Spielberg project set up at Apple TV+ alongside the anthology series reboot Amazing Stories.
