DC will continue making R-rated movies after Joker success

November 27, 2019 by Liam Waddington

According to a new report by Variety, Warner Bros. has become more comfortable with the concept of creating more DC films aimed at adult audiences following the release of the hugely successful Joker. In the report, insiders are predicting that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will receive an R-rating, alongside the previously confirmed Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Birds of Prey is also expected to get a similar rating and insiders predict that James Gunn’s upcoming Suicide Squad sequel will also be R-rated. In the case of Birds of Prey, the film won’t be in the pitch-black, grim vein of Joker. Insiders describe the film has a more humorous, spirited, girl gang adventure, albeit not one for younger children.

If Warner Bros. is becoming comfortable with the idea of making more films with a higher age rating, it’ll be interesting to see if Matt Reeves’ The Batman will go into the R-rated territory or if WB will look to appease younger audiences with a PG-13 certificate.

Birds of Prey is set for release on February 7th 2020 and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is currently slated for an August 6th 2021 release. The DC slate also includes Wonder Woman 1984, Aquaman 2, Green Lantern Corps, The Flash, and Black Adam.

Do you think Warner Bros should continue making R-rated content for their DC brand? Or should they stick with the PG-13 rating? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
