Avatar sequels mark end of live-action filming for 2019 with new sneak peek set photo

December 1, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It’s not quite the end of production, but the official Twitter account for the Avatar franchise has announced that James Cameron and company have wrapped filming on the live-action portion of Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 for the year, marking the occasion by sharing a sneak peek set photo featuring the Sea Dragon, “a massive mothership that carries an array of other sea-going craft.”

That's a wrap, Na'vi Nation! 💙

It's our last day of live-action filming in 2019, and we're celebrating with a sneak peek. 👀

Cameron has been shooting the live-action sequences for his first two Avatar sequels since the spring, having wrapped production on the performance capture aspects back in November of last year.

Specific plot details for the four sequels to the formerly-highest grossing movie of all time are being kept under wraps, but we do know that much of Avatar 2 will shift its attention to the oceans of Pandora, with Cameron employing specially designed underwater motion capture technology for the very first time.

Avatar 2 will open on December 18th 2020, followed by Avatar 3 on December 17th 2021, Avatar 4 on December 20th 2024 and Avatar 5 on December 19th 2025. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi and Sigourney Weaver all reprise their roles from the first film, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brandan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John and CJ Jones.
