The New Mutants director says there were never plans for an R-rated cut

January 7, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Josh Boone, the director of The New Mutants, says that there were never any plans to make an R-rated cut of the film.

At long last, the end looks to be in sight for The New Mutants – the now Disney-owned X-Men spin-off film. We now have a release date for the film (April 2020), a new trailer, and a PG-13 certificate.

But with all the delays, some were expecting that the film would perhaps reappear as an R-rated feature but according to director Josh Boone (via ComicBook.com), this was never on the cards. Replying to a fan on his Instagram account, the director said:

“The movie has always been and will always be PG-13. There was never a plan for an R-rated movie.”

Whatever the film’s age rating is, X-Men fans are surely just excited to see that the film is actually coming out. It will be interesting to see what the finished product is and how it holds up to other recent superhero efforts.

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. It is set for release on April 3rd 2020.
