Todd McFarlane hopes to have a big Spawn movie announcement “in the next month”

February 4, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2017, it finally seems as though Todd McFarlane was on track to realise his dream of relaunching the Spawn movie franchise, with Blumhouse Productions boarding the long-gestating reboot and Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner signing on for the roles of Al Simmons/Spawn and Detective Twitch Williams.

Unfortunately, as has been the case for much of the decade or so that McFarlane has been working on the reboot, things then fell quiet on the project, until an update last year when the legendary comic book creator revealed that “creative differences” was responsible for holding up the project.

Well, speaking to Newsarama, McFarlane has now teased a “big announcement” in the near future, stating that the success of Warner Bros.’ Joker has led to renewed discussions about his plans for a dark, R-rated adaptation of the Image Comics series.

“When I was at New York Comic Con, Joker came out and Hollywood has a penchant for looking at what works, then doing it 10 times over. This movie opened up, then made a billion dollars which is still 33% bigger than any other R-rated movie in the history of cinema. So, Hollywood is on the go for R-rated comic book stuff, right? The phone has been ringing and I’ve got lots of people thinking about Spawn now. There’s a different momentum happening right now and in the next month, I should have another big announcement about the movie.”

McFarlane then went on to suggest that the project may be approaching the “now or never” point, adding that: “Hopefully we can start production this year, because if we don’t, I probably won’t make it. The window is open right now and if I can’t pull it off this year, it’s only going to get harder, right? I’m confident enough that it’s going to work, but give me a month, and I’ll get back to you.”

Do you think McFarlane’s Spawn will ever see the light of day? Is now the right time? Let us know in the comments or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
