While Birds of Prey had no problem pushing the boundaries, it seems like there’s one thing director Cathy Yan felt was too much. When speaking with Empire, Yan discussed the fight scene in the evidence room, where Harley Quinn took on an entire gang, and explained how they “had so many different ideas” for that particular scene.
According to Yan, Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson “wanted a giant double-ended dildo that (Harley) had to fend off.” The director went on to explain how she wanted to give Harley “a big fluffy bear stuffed with drugs that she used as a pillow to fight with.” In the interview, though, Yan does note that they “had to show some sort of restraint,” despite it being “a cheeky movie.”
Interesting to hear that Cathy Yan and Christina Hodson had even crazier things planned, but didn’t want to push the limits of good taste to that level. With many believing Birds of Prey‘s R-rating hurt at the box office, the film still brought in around a $200 million worldwide total before the recent current events halted big-screen showings.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.
Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) directs Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
