Scarlett Johansson promises “a big tonal shift” with Marvel’s Black Widow

April 5, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Although Phase Four marks the beginning of a new chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Endgame and the culmination of the Infinity Saga, it will launch in familiar territory as Scarlett Johansson reprises the role of Natasha Romanoff in the long-awaited Black Widow movie.

Neverthess, it seems we can expect as fresh approach to the Marvel formula with the Black Widow movie, with Johansson promising “a big tonal shift” during an interview with Total Film.

“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of,” said Johansson. “The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”

Sadly, we’ll have to wait a further six months before we get to see for ourselves, as Black Widow and the rest of Marvel’s Phase Four feature film slate were all pushed back on Friday, with the film now set to open in November of this year.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on November 6th 2020.
