Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reveal why they returned for The Matrix 4

June 8, 2020 by Liam Waddington

One of the most surprising films currently in production is the fourth instalment in The Matrix franchise with stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning alongside one of the directors of the original trilogy, Lana Wachowski, who is also co-writing the project.

Now, in a recent interview with Empire, Reeves and Moss revealed Wachowski’s return and this new screenplay was the reasoning behind why they both decided to return to The Matrix – despite the series coming to an end in 2003 with The Matrix Revolutions.

“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me,” Reeves said. “That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”

Moss echoed Reeves’ comments while also noting that she was surprised The Matrix 4 was happening in the first place.

“I never thought that it would happen. It was never on my radar at all. When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, ‘This is a gift.’ It was just very exciting.”

Unfortunately, the plot for The Matrix 4 is currently being kept under wraps at Warner Bros. but we do know John Wick and Deadpool 2 filmmakers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch – who served as stunt performers and coordinators on 1999’s The Matrix and its sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions – are returning to help out on certain action sequences.

The Matrix 4 is currently set for release on May 21st 2021, however, it is currently unknown if the delay in production due to the ongoing global health crisis will impact the 2021 release date.

The Matrix 4 is being directed by Lana Wachowski from a script by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The cast features returning Matrix cast members Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Niobe) alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Neil Patrick Harris (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Jonathan Groff (Frozen II), Priyanka Chopra (Baywatch), Ellen Hollman (Spartacus) and Andrew Caldwell (iZombie), as well as Sense8 stars Erendira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt and Brian J. Smith.
