Red Stewart on the underappreciated superhero movies of the 90s…
Superhero movies are a staple of today’s cinema: even with the global health crisis raging on (our support for healthcare workers everywhere!), the hype for upcoming releases like Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow has not showed signs of depleting.
But like every popular form of media, there has been a dark side to comic book-based movies. The 1990s, in particular, were notorious for almost destroying the genre. Batman & Robin is the most infamous, but others like Steel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, and Judge Dredd all contributed to the failure.
