Robert Pattinson offers up a strange explanation about building his take on The Batman

November 7, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The Batman, from director Matt Reeves, is surely launching the character and franchise into a vastly new direction. Nothing says that more than casting Robert Pattinson as the titular role, something the actor is opening up about more and more as production on the film continues.

In typical fashion for the actor, Pattinson offered up a bizarre answer to Vanity Fair France when asked how he’s crafted this version of Bruce Wayne and Batman:

“To start, The Batman, I’m using things at the moment that seem fragile compared to the importance of the project. Conversations I’ve had with close friends, embryos of dreams. This is the secret and sensitive part of the actor facing the heaviness of the project. On The Batman, on Tenet, a gigantic team of technicians surrounds you, and when you say, ‘Let’s go Robert…Action!’ you have to forget this mass of people and play in front of your own thoughts, your own demons.”

Diving into this answer more, the actor says there are “no rules” to how long it takes to make this character, and he pulls from some strange places: “These things are often very intimate, sometimes they are even dreams that I summon up in order to be able to play the scene the way I think it should be played.”

Though this interview has been translated from French, the answers still showcase Pattinson’s unusual personality in the best way. While the filmmaker looks to take The Batman in a new direction, so too it seems will the man under the cape and cowl.

The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) as Officer Stanley Merkel and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
