Rhys Darby reunites with Taika Waititi for HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death

January 9, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Back in September it was announced that HBO Max has ordered a period comedy series entitled Our Flag Means Death from Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi, and now comes word that Waititi’s regular collaborator Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords, What We Do in the Shadows) is set to lead the cast.

Set in the early 18th century, Our Flag Means Death is loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet, a well-to-do gentleman farmer and pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become the captain of the pirate ship Revenge.

Waititi will executive produce and direct the pilot episode, while David Jenkins (People of Earth) will serve as showrunner.

Darby, whose credits include Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, will also be seen in Waititi’s next film Next Goal Wins, which revolves around the American Samoa football team and its efforts to quality for the World Cup.
