Borat, Promising Young Woman, and Ted Lasso win big at the WGA Awards

March 22, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

The 73rd Writers Guild of America Awards took place on Sunday night and the results have gone some way to cementing Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and Promising Young Woman as the screenplay favourites as far as the Academy Awards are concerned.

In a virtual ceremony hosted by Kal Penn, Amazon Studios’ Borat took the adapted screenplay honour for its star and writer Sacha Baron Cohen, who not only acknowledged the fact that the nine writers on the movie probably made up 60% of the Writers Guild, hence the award, but he took time to thank his unwitting stooge Rudolph Giuliani for doing “everything we hoped for”.

Original screenplay went to Emerald Fennell’s outstanding Promising Young Woman, which continues to gather pace as it snowballs towards the Kodak Theatre in time for April’s Academy Awards.

In the main TV category Apple’s Ted Lasso scored a brace, taking home the award for new series, as well as top comedy series, with its Executive Producer Bill Lawrence urging the audience to “keep watching TV” during his acceptance speech. Like we have a choice these days?
