Zack Snyder reveals Army of the Dead 2 title, teases next project Rebel Moon

October 30, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Zack Snyder made a successful return to the zombie genre earlier this year with the Netflix hit Army of the Dead, and the streamer has wasted little time in spinning it out into an entire franchise with the spinoff prequel movie Army of Thieves landing today [read our review here], an anime series in the works, and Snyder currently busy developing a sequel to the main movie.

Speaking to Inverse to promote the release of Army of Thieves, which is directed by Matthias Schweighofer and sees him reprising his role as Ludwig Dieter, Snyder spoke briefly about the prospect of the character’s return for Army of the Dead 2, during which he let slip that the sequel is titled Planet of the Dead.

“The real adventure would be to see what happened to [Dieter] when that safe door closed,” said Snyder. “Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 – aka Planet of the Dead – but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”

It’s unclear where Planet of the Dead fits into Snyder’s schedule, with the filmmaker currently working on another Netflix project, the Akira Kurosawa-inspired sci-fi fantasy Rebel Moon, which he’s recently described as being reminiscent of Man of Steel’s Krypton scenes, albeit on steroids:

“The beginning of Man of Steel has pretty big science fiction elements in it, right? Krypton. That’s kind of what we’re doing in Rebel Moon, but on the biggest steroids that I can give it. ” said Snyder during an appearance on the Post-Cred Podcast. “Frankly, what I’m really interested [in] with this movie is creating a romantic sci-fi film on a scale that is frankly as big as you can make the movie.”

While we await more news on Snyder’s future Netflix projects, both Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves are available to stream now on the platform.
