Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere moves back two days, but we’re getting two episodes

April 1, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

While May 25th seemed like the perfect date to debut Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, what with it being the 45th anniversary of the release of Jedi Master’s first ever appearance in the original Star Wars, it seems we’re going to have to wait two days longer for the premiere of Lucasfilm’s latest live-action Disney+ series.

Leading man Ewan McGregor, who is reprising his Prequel Trilogy role as the now-Ben Kenobi, made the announcement himself with the following video, although he also brought with him some good news as we’ll now be getting not one but two episodes of the six-episode series on its new premiere date of May 27th.

The premiere date shift now puts the Obi-Wan series in direct competition with Stranger Things, with Netflix dropping the first half of the supernatural drama’s fourth season that same day. No reason has been given for the shift from Wednesdays to Fridays, although it be to move the later episodes out of direct competition with Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel, which will release on Wednesdays from June 8th.

“During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.”

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is being directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian), with McGregor joined in the cast by Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader), Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) and Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars), as well as Star Wars newcomers Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine, Benny Safdie and Grant Feely.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 27th.
