Hulu cancels Marvel Television’s M.O.D.O.K. animated series

May 16, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Some two-and-a-half years after Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios assumed full creative control for both Marvel Entertainment’s film and TV divisions, the last remnants of the old Marvel Television have been swept away with Hulu swinging the axe on the adult animated comedy series M.O.D.O.K. after a single season.

Deadline broke the news of the show’s axing, with co-creator and M.O.D.O.K. voice actor Patton Oswalt subsequently taking to Twitter to confirm his short-lived time as George Tarleton – a.k.a. the titular supervillain – is over.

*sigh* oh well

Got to work with the best writers, a dream voice cast, and @Marvel let us run amok in their toy box. Another great experience. Forward! https://t.co/TjOMuQ1Kfr

M.O.D.O.K. was originally ordered by Hulu alongside fellow animated shows Hit-Monkey, Howard the Duck and The Tigra and Dazzler Show, which would have built to a Defenders-style crossover entitled The Offenders. However, only M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey actually made it as far as the screen, and barring a shock late season two renewal for Hit-Monkey, the era of Marvel Television and its output appears to be at an end.

Originally led by Jeph Loeb, Marvel Television launched in 2013 with its Avengers spinoff Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and went on to produce shows such as Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Inhumans, The Punisher, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, The Gifted and Legion. Its final live-action show Helstrom was cancelled by Hulu back in December 2020.
