Darks Winds renewed for second season

June 22, 2022 by Ricky Church

AMC has given a second season renewal to its Western noir series Dark Winds, which stars Zahn McClarnon (Westworld) and is executive produced by Robert Redford and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Dark Winds is a psychological thriller based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series from mystery writer Tony Hillerman. The series was created by Graham Roland with Chris Eyre (Hide Away) and stars McClarnon as Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Kiowa Gordon (Roswell, New Mexico) as his new deputy Jim Chee on the Navajo Nation in the 1970s Southwest. The pair are put to the test as they investigate a double homicide that makes them question their spiritual beliefs and each other.

“This once-in-a-lifetime creative team and cast have delivered something truly special with Dark Winds,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “We can’t wait to share the rest of this thrill ride of a first season with the fans and follow Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee into a second season on AMC and AMC+ next year. Overwhelming gratitude to our entire production team and a special thanks to executive producers Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre and of course Zahn McClarnon, who also leads the cast and brings humanity, authority and the wisdom of richly lived experiences to everything he does.”

Dark Winds premiered on AMC on June 12 for a six-episode season. The series has so far earned rave reviews from critics and has the largest series launch for AMC+, the network’s streaming service. The second season will air in 2023 for another six-episode season.

On a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation, Lieutenant Leaphorn of the Tribal Police and his new deputy, Chee, battle forces of evil, each other, and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Dark Winds also stars Jessica Matten, Deanna Allison, Rainn Wilson, Elva Guerra, Jeremiah Bitsui, Eugene Brave Rock and Noah Emmerich.
