David Gordon Green on Halloween Ends: “We never once considered making a Laurie and Michael movie”

October 25, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

In the wake of lacklustre reviews, a second weekend box-office capitulation which saw it slip -80% from it’s underperforming opening, and frankly ridiculous fan petitions, Halloween Ends director David Gordon Green has been speaking out about how they never intended his trilogy closer to be “final showdown-type brawl” between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode.

Speaking with MovieMaker about everything from the influence Halloween III: Season of the Witch had on the film, including an aborted ending that would have taken place in the Silver Shamrock mask factory, through to why he wanted it to be a love story between Andi Matichak’s Allyson and Rohan Campbell’s Corey, Green reveals why he chose to shift the narrative from the characters who’d defined this franchise since 1978.

Green stated “School shootings make you scratch your head, because you know there’s a path to destruction, and it doesn’t end with a guy in a mask”, and so the finale to his own Halloween trilogy wouldn’t necessarily focus on one of the most iconic guys in a mask of all time.

He continued “Honestly, we never once considered making a Laurie and Michael movie. The concept that it should be a final showdown-type brawl never even crossed our minds. I wanted to see where it would go. I wanted one to win, one to die. But we were always more ambitious with that. So how did we want to go out? By doing what no one except us would do: make a love story. It’s our version of going out with a bang and opening our hearts to this community and these characters.”

It’s an ambitious approach, especially with a feverish fanbase built up over 44-years, yet according to Green even Halloween creator John Carpenter “was cool with it”, having had the same feeling when it came to making Halloween III, Green said the legendary director claimed “we’re not going to just make Michael Myers and Laurie Strode movies all the time, we’re gonna mix it up”.

Four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life. But when a young man, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell; The Hardy Boys, Virgin River), is accused of killing a boy he was babysitting; it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that will force Laurie to finally confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all.

Halloween Ends is once again directed by Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills‘ David Gordon Green from a screenplay by Green, Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier. Featuring in the cast are Jamie Lee Curtis as the iconic Laurie Strode, Andi Matichak as Allyson Nelson, James Jude Courtney, Nick Castle as The Shape, Rohan Campbell as Corey Cunningham, Kyle Richard as Lindsey Wallace, Michael O’Leary as Dr. Mathis, and Omar Dorsey as Sheriff Barker.

Halloween Ends is currently in cinemas and on Peacock.
