Evil Dead Rise director promises “an extraordinary amount of vicious, malevolent Deadites”

December 17, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

The Evil Dead franchise returns to the big screen in 2023, and this time its bringing the action out of the woods and into the city as director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) looks to expand the beloved horror series with Evil Dead Rise, an all-new instalment with an all-new cast of characters.

Thankfully though, it will retain some very familiar elements, as Cronin explains to Total Film:

“There’s no Ash in this story and there’s no cabin in the woods, and they’re two iconic elements of what Evil Dead is. But the movie does include the [Necronomicon] and an extraordinary amount of vicious, malevolent Deadites, so I was always pretty comfortable making that move [to Los Angeles.

“It still needed to maintain some of the claustrophobia, and that translated really well from the cabin into an urban environment. This is about a family in a rundown building stuck in their apartment, so it follows the same rhythm but puts it in a more contemporary space.”

Evil Dead Rise is set to invade cinemas in April, so hopefully we won’t have too long to wait before we get to glimpse a first trailer.

In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

Featuring in the cast of Evil Dead Rise are Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl), Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist), Morgan Davies (The End), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence) and Nell Fisher (Northspur). Original Evil Dead trilogy director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell are producing, although Campbell will not be reprising his role as Ash Williams.

Evil Dead Rise is set for release on April 21st 2023.
