Finn Jones wants Iron Fist return, blames time constraints and bad scheduling for Netflix’s Marvel series failure

December 29, 2022 by Gary Collinson

While Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock has made his big Marvel return with a guest role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and has a major part to play going forward with Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, we’re yet to hear anything with regards to whether any of Cox’s fellow Defenders will be reprising their Netflix roles and joining the Man without Fear as part of the MCU proper.

There’s been plenty of rumour and speculation however, particularly with regards to fan-favourites Krysten Ritter and Jon Bernthal, although it’s safe to say that Iron Fist fans have been rather quiet and the clamour for more of Finn Jones’ Danny Rand doesn’t quite match that of Ritter’s Jessica Jones or Bernthal’s Punisher.

Nevertheless, former Game of Thrones star Jones hasn’t given up hope, with the actor telling Geekscape Podcast that he’s itching for another crack at the character.

“Of course I would [return]. I’d love another chance,” said Jones. “I care about [Danny Rand] deeply. I believe in that character, I believe there is a lot of work that can be done… I love the ability to prove someone wrong. And I want to prove all those [doubters] wrong. I know I have it in me, and I know I can give the Danny Rand performance that fans want.”

While Netflix’s Marvel shows were generally very well received by fans and critics, Iron Fist was the outlier, with the first season specifically coming in for major criticism – something that Jones attributes to a rushed schedule in order to complete the season ahead of filming on The Defenders crossover.

“I think, really, the first season, there was a lot of creative challenges, and it didn’t live up to the expectations, and I think that came down to…really, it came down to scheduling conflicts. That season of television was rushed because we had The Defenders that we had to film straight afterwards. We had all those other actors locked into that schedule, so we had to film those thirteen episodes of television in that set time. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have the time to do what was expected and what was desired, which was a kick-ass, amazing kung fu show and martial arts show.”

“[In] Season 2, we really understood what the flaws were, and we worked hard to course-correct the show. And in my opinion, we did. We did a fantastic job bringing that show back up to code…. unfortunately, just a month after that show had been premiered, all of the shows got deleted because Disney wanted to create their own series. They wanted to do their own thing on their own platform, which is understandable. But it was a shame that it kind of, just when we were out of the gate, ready to kind of go running, we were just, like, yanked.”

What are your thoughts on Iron Fist? Would you like to see Finn Jones getting a second chance at the character? If not, who would you like to see cast as Danny Rand, and where would he fit into the MCU? Let us know your thoughts out on social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Iron Fist is available to stream on Disney+.
